The shoot took only 10 days and used iPhone 7 Plus rather than professional cameras.

The idea for the movie was born in the director’s mind when he was undergoing a course of psychotherapy to treat a depressive condition. Lars von Trier endowed Justine with his own qualities, conveying his personal experiences in the character.

The picture was a spin-off of the series of the same name, which was closed due to low ratings after the first season. De Niro agreed to star in the movie at the request of Cooper, although he considered his role boring and mediocre.

Bell meets the pregnant wife of a rising star, trying to get as close as possible to the double. When Daniel also shows interest in the professor, the fates of the men are mysteriously intertwined.
For scenes in which the doppelgangers are side by side, the director used a tennis ball on a stick. This helped Jake Gyllenhaal to determine where to look during the dialog.

Because of the shocking results, the real experiment had to be stopped after a few days.
