A beautiful film about the fact that German culture, in addition to rationalism, is also characterized by sentimentality and a longing for beauty. Kurt Barnert spent his childhood in Nazi Germany and his youth in the socialist GDR. Both countries strictly controlled art, restricting it within the strict framework of realism.
But Kurt, who wants to create freely, cannot be deterred by the Berlin Wall or the direct threat to his life. He escapes from East Germany to West Germany, falls in love with a girl, Elly, and encounters ghosts of the past in her home.
Oscar-winning director Donnersmarck’s drama focuses on the life and work of the successful German painter Gerhard Richter, who pioneered the “capitalist realism” movement.
