The plot follows a middle-aged man, tired of loneliness, and a disabled woman who suffered a lot from abuse. Two impoverished peasants from Gansu province enter into an arranged marriage just to support each other. The couple has only an old donkey, a vegetable garden and simple tools. As they overcome difficulties together, their affection for each other develops into something more.
During the first week of screening, the film broke all box office records in China. Then it was banned from cinemas, as it shows the real poverty of rural provinces frowned upon by the authorities.

To save their reputation, the lovers come up with a plan to have Antonio pretending as Olivia’s boyfriend. He agrees to a be a part of these scheme in exchange for money needed to cover his family’s debts.
Pretending as Antonio’s girlfriend, Olivia is learning more and more about his family and begins to be imbued with its uncomplicated joys, becoming sincerely attached to a fake boyfriend.
This is the last role of Carmen Salinas, who played Cecilia. The actress passed away shortly after filming wrapped in December 2021.
