This British comedy film illustrates what appropriation of another’s identity can lead to. Jack Wearing often leaves his estate in London to visit his wayward brother Ernest, whom he himself invented.
Upon his arrival in the city, the man transforms himself into a “relative,” as his lover Gwendolen attaches great importance to symbolism. The girl dreams of marrying her chosen one with the name Ernest, and Jack decides to use the information for personal gain. The situation is complicated when Warding’s deception becomes known to another man.
The scene in which actor Rupert Everett kisses his colleague Colin Firth on the cheek is improvised, but the director decided to keep the funny episode in the final version.
